This month Adam Lipus will be discussing his new article Qualitative Nutrition Research in a Majority Indigenous Community: Reflections on the Role of a Non-Indigenous Researcher  (Lipus & Calle, 2019)

The abstract:

In public health research, we typically discuss ethics and power dynamics at a conceptual, systemic level. But power dynamics and imbalances often manifest in subtle yet consequential ways between an individual researcher and a community of interest. To illustrate these power dynamics and how they affect research methodology, this article describes a qualitative nutrition research project in a majority indigenous community in El Alto, Bolivia. We summarize the process by which researchers from a U.S. academic institution engaged with Bolivian institutions, a local facilitator, and research participants. This story is primarily from the perspective of the white American man who led the project as part of his Master of Public Health program. It also includes commentary from the indigenous Bolivian woman who contributed extensively to the project’s fieldwork, data analysis, and data interpretation. We emphasize interpersonal relationships, examine assumptions, and share lessons learned through a project that involved indigenous and non-indigenous people as participants and as researchers. Through this article, we invite readers to reflect on their personal roles in creating mutually beneficial partnerships between researchers and communities.

AaEA’s monthly journal club features an evaluation article from evaluation journals and the gray literature.  The purpose of these meetings is to offer an easy way for people to get a brief review of new topics, tools, and issues in the evaluation community. You are not required to read the article, but, try to if you can. So hop on the phone and sip your favorite beverage while listening to a summary of the article and join in the discussion.
