Position Summary/ Objective

IFAW seeks a MEL Data Specialist to join the Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (PMEL) team. This position reports to the Director of PMEL and performs a variety of responsibilities, specialized duties, both assigned and self-led, with a technical focus. The Specialist will work with MEL staff and project teams across all of IFAW’s programs globally to support data usage and analysis to advance data-driven decision making and active learning to grow and monitor the impact of our work.  The Specialist is key to implementing online platforms for performance monitoring and analysis across projects by researching, cleaning, analyzing, and reporting data. This role may also support data collection activities as needed.  The Specialist will be responsible for overseeing data quality assessments to ensure monitoring data is clean, accurate and correctly recorded. This role is focused on research and data management, and is not a developer position.  Post COVID, this role will be based in one of IFAW’s country offices with the potential for partial remote work over time, but will not be fully remote.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with program field staff to review raw MEL datasets and provide guidance on utilizing the online monitoring platform LogAlto; suggest changes and improvements to data structuring, collection, analysis and reporting to improve data usage and integration into decision making
  • Analyze data in LogAlto and create user-friendly visual dashboards for project, program, departmental, and organizational level outputs and outcomes, as well as analytics to support donor or external stakeholder needs
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative data analysis for monitoring or evaluation data using statistical and coding software tools
  • Support project teams in the structural development and query of databases
  • Develop and implement a plan for on-going staff learning and engagement of the monitoring tool LogAlto as well as other data collection or analysis topics through trainings, webinars, and knowledge sharing
  • Train and support project and MEL staff during project start up on LogAlto system
  • Troubleshoot ongoing LogAlto MEL issues and liaise with vendor developers to ensure smooth processes and solutions identified
  • Lead internal Data Quality Assessments (DQA) of project monitoring data
  • Support data collection and survey design, as needed
  • Support project or proposal development as needed, and provide input to project MEL plans or proposals around data collection and analysis
  • International travel up to 10% to directly support project teams in the field

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field preferred and three years of relevant experience particularly in monitoring and evaluation, or a Master’s degree and two years of relevant experience
  • Experience with monitoring and evaluation software systems, LogAlto preferred but not required
  • Experience with data management, collection, cleaning, entry, analysis and reporting
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative data analysis using software tools (i.e. SPSS, Stata, JMP, Nvivo, Dedoose, etc)
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills and cultural sensitivity, with ability to work with international project teams at headquarters and the field
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience training and mentoring people on utilizing software systems and developing data monitoring frameworks
  • Prior experience in monitoring and evaluation field for international development or conservation in a donor-funded setting preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, excellent problem-solving skills, flexibility, and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated organizational, administrative, and time management skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, on multiple projects and to multi-task under tight deadlines
  • Ability to have occasional calls or meetings outside of normal work hours to accomadate staff in other time zones
  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken English required; fluency in multiple languages a plus
