Many philanthropic organizations have made it their mission to improve the lives of children and communities of color. To create and support the systemic and comprehensive change needed for this improvement, many of these foundations have embraced place-based grantmaking.

Place-based grantmaking enables foundations to focus on improving whole communities rather than a single issue. Many foundations have also made a significant investment in increasing the evaluation capacity of non-profit and community-based organizations that are their grantees in their chosen places. Evaluation Capacity Building (ECB), also known as evaluation technical assistance, is critical to the success of grantmaking because it equips community-based organizations with the skills and tools needed to assess and monitor their progress; make changes as needed; and ultimately, to tell their story. ECB is more than increasing community-based organization’s capacity to collect, analyze, and interpret data. However, grantees often do not take full advantage of the vast array of resources and assistance offered. This digital workshop will consider the part of the evaluation TA provider, who is often an outsider to the community and outline strategies to encourage active and frequent participation in evaluation capacity building activities.
