Municipal solid waste is emerging as one of the most pressing global challenges inflicting public health, environmental, social, and economic costs. Globally, inadequate solid waste management contributes to climate change— accounting for about 5% of global carbon emissions —and plastic pollution, which has caused damages to the marine environment estimated at $13 billion per year. Locally, solid waste harms public health, putting millions at risk due to soil and water contamination and poor air quality. Solid waste generation is set to double in large and medium-sized cities by 2050 and triple in the poorest countries.

This session will engage international experts to explore innovative solid waste management solutions, including how to advance beyond the traditional linear economic model (take-make-dispose) and introduce sustainable alternatives that prioritize reducing consumption and increasing reuse, thus contributing to a circular economy.
